Inescapable~ An Amazing Book

The minute I picked this book up I was hooked. I read the first 150 pages way into the morning hours. I was captivated by Lizzie who had run away from her Mennonite family and town of Kingdom, Kansas. She is a struggling young mom with a daughter who is doing her best to raise her  child on her own.

She has worked hard to build a new life for her and her child when she is followed and frightened by letters from an unknown man. Scared ~ she has nowhere to turn but back to her home and her father. Her father who was an unfair and unloving example of a Christian.

When she returns after six years she finds nothing is much the same but her condemning father. The town accepted her with open arms~ full of God's love and compassion. For the first time in her life she finds God's love through the people of Kingdom~ she opens her heart to Jesus.

Only the trouble follows her and she fears she must run again. She soon discovers she really has nowhere to run but into the arms of Jesus.

I loved~ loved~loved this book.  I have never read any books from Nancy but I loved her writing style and will be looking forward to reading her other books. I give this book a 5+ stars.

I was provided this book by Bethany Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

Dancing Through The Valley~

He sendeth the springs into the valleys, which run among the hills

Psalm 104:10

(KJV)

Jesus came from high places to dwell with us in low places. He spent thirty-three years among us in the valley. The valley represents a dry and barren place.  Oh ~ but we see here in this verse that God sends springs gushing forth in the valleys~ between the mountains.  He sends cool rushing waters to bring life.

Missouri is having a drought and the 100 degree temps are making matters worse. The ground is so parched and dry it is cracking. When it rains ~ the ground seems to soak it up with relief.

On the other hand ~ have you ever put your feet in a fresh~ cool ~cold spring on a hot summer day?  Nothing better than that let me tell you.

Jesus came by way of a lowly manger, completed His work on a lonely hill called the place of a skull that sprang to life with His great sacrifice for mankind. In that valley the birds sang, the earth danced with elegance~ and the breezes carried mercy and grace to all man.
We can still hear music in the buzz of a bee, in the scent of a rose and in the dancing of of the trees.  Listen carefully......can you hear the music of all Creation praising it's Creator?

We won't always hear the music ~ but we can still dance in the valleys of life. We can still dance by faith with assurance that our Creator is in control. Even the wind and waves obey His voice.

By trusting God~ staying in His Word~ and being encouraged by others who have spent time dancing in the valley~ we can learn what it means to not only thrive and  survive but we can continue to grow!

Jesus can bring a rushing spring of fresh renewal to our souls~ we only need to be willing to receive it.  Praying you splash today in God's fresh spring. It is easy to dance on  top the mountains but when we dance in the valley ~we are growing!

The Fiddler~ Amish Book Review

Oh ~ did I ever enjoy this book. This book is the first book to the Home To Hickory Hollow series. Beverly outdid herself on this book. And I should know because I have read all of her books and series.

Amelia Devries is a talented  musician who has spent her whole life performing as a classical fiddler. She feels like life is passing her by and she is missing out on a "real life."   Not wanting to hurt her father who taught her all he knew she keeps performing.

She secretly picks up a new hobby as a country fiddler with a different stage name. How long before she will be found out?

A happen stance meeting with an Amish man named Michael Hosteler changes her whole perspective on a simple life.  Only she is English and he is Amish~ their love can not be allowed to blossom for it could never be~ or could it?

I loved this book and I give it 5 stars.  This is my favorite summer read of 2012.

This book was provided to me by Bethany Publishers in exchange for my honest review.

No Worries!

Be strong and of a good courage, fear not,
nor be afraid of them: for the Lord thy God,
 he it is that doth go with thee;
he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Deuteronomy 31:6

 (KJV)

Sometimes Satan comes to us with a pretty lure and then decorates the package with fear. Think of how he tempted Jesus in the desert~ when Jesus was beginning to starve, was so weary and tired. He came along whispering his big~fat lies!

Sometimes if we are not careful he will tempt us away from trusting God.

  • Look at the balance in the checkbook and fear we won't make it.
  • Look at how exhausted you are~ we won't have the energy to do what you need to do.
  • You messed up again and ruined your diet~ just give up.
  • Your child is walking away from faith~ they may never come back.
  • The list could go on and on.....
It seems like when my children were small the money was tight and the bills were high.  Guess what? We made it through~ just fine. God was faithful. The kids are mostly grown and times are easier.

But in the place where I once worried about money~ Dr. bills ~ house payments....I find myself with a whole new set of worries. What a big stinkin waste of my time.

Philippians 4:6-7

 (KJV)
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

We can worry or we can pray but we can't do both at the same time. How about today we let our  petitions shape our worries into prayers.  Leave them at the feet of Jesus and just enjoy the journey~ let our light shine and trust God today.

Happy Monday~

Soap and Suds Party~ Buttery-Vanilla Soap Recipe

There is a little soap store in Jamesport, Mo that I visit when I visit my Amish friends. They have soap by the slabs and you cute the size you want. I just love their soap. My favorite is Goat's Milk Soap~ it is so moisturizing. But I don't have a recipe~do you have one?

I have never tried the whole lye thing but I want to.

I have this great idea. I am looking for good soap recipes. Please leave  your favorite soap recipe or a link to your recipe in the comments. I would love to try your recipe.

Buttery~ Vanilla  Soap

5 pounds of melt and pour glycerin soap
3 bars of Dove (cut in chunks)
6 capsules 100 IU Vitamin E
2 Tablespoons Powdered Milk
 Butter Cream Scented Oil
Vanilla Scented Oil

* I buy my oil from Nature's Garden Candle Supply online.

Use a double boiler or use an old pan and melt on very ~very low heat or you will scorch your soap.
I melted mine on very low heat. I left some of my Dove in chunks instead of melting it all the way.

Pour into a bread pan that has been generously oiled with olive oil. I topped mine with course oatmeal and lavender from my garden~ makes it look beautiful. Cool completely. Pop out and slice into desired sized bars. Enjoy!

Oatmeal Soap Recipe~

Oatmeal has been known for many things besides for breakfast. A good oatmeal soap recipe that can help protect and nourish the skin and can be used to remove dead skin is available here for you to try.
Ingredients:
1 bar of mild soap (a large Dove bar soap is recommended)
3 to 4 tablespoons oatmeal
4 to 5 tablespoons water
Procedure:
1. Finely grind the oatmeal in a blender or miller. It should be finely ground but not too powdery.
2. Using a cheese grater, grate the bar of mild soap in a microwavable bowl.
3. Add the 4 to 5 tablespoons of water to the grated mild soap.
4. Put the soap and water mixture in a microwave for 2 to 3 minutes on high temperature. The mixture will tend to rise due to the heat. Do not let it bubble over. When the mixture rises, stir the mixture before it bubbles over.
5. If the soap has dissolved, take out the bowl of mixture from the microwave.
6. Gradually add in 3 to 4 tablespoons of the finely ground oatmeal, mixing well after each addition. Add and mix the oatmeal until the consistency of the mixture and the proportion of the oatmeal to the soap are to your liking.
7. Pour the mixture into your molds. Suggested molds for oatmeal soap are muffin pans, small bowls or 1 inch height round tin cans (you can use taller ones but you will have to remove both ends and slice the soap into round bars once it is cooled).
8. When the oatmeal soap mixture has slightly solidified but still warm, remove it from the mold and let it stand to cool thoroughly.
9. When the oatmeal soaps have completely cooled, wrap or package as desired.
Oatmeal soap is a good exfoliant and can be used to relieve itchiness due to insect bites and dry skin.
You may also add any of the following:
goats milk
vanilla
cinnamon
cocoa butter
essential oils
Enjoy or wrap in cellophane with a bow and homemade tag and you have a wonderful gift for giving away!

What In The World Would A Proverbs 31 Lady Look Like Today?

While I was going about my crazy day yesterday I tuned in to listen to a radio preacher. He was preaching on the Proverbs 31 lady~you know the perfect woman we all try to live up to. You can always learn something new. In Proverbs 31 King Lemuel is telling us what his mother taught him about finding a woman~a good woman. She must have thought her dear son was a saint for she wanted the ultimate woman for him. Just my 2 cents worth on that!

The preacher said upon research that King Lemuel's mother had a rough past~she was very unlike the woman she is training him to find. If this preacher is correct I find it interesting that she wanted her son to find a woman above mistakes ~like she had made. Isn't that how we are with our children.? We want them to make better choices than we made. We want them to trust God better than we did. We want them to have the very best. King Lemuel's mother loved him and wanted him to have a good and Godly woman.

I am talking silently to God this morning and I say, "God you know it is after all 2012~we don't live in these Bible times." As if it is not relevant to us today. Which is what all women say when we just are intimidated to try to be a Proverbs 31 lady.

So I thought~what would King Lemuel's mother tell him if they lived in 2012.

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

The 2010 Proverbs 31 lady~ Are you ready?

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.

* She won't spend all his money at Walmart, TJ Maxx or Neiman Marcus. He can trust her to spend money wisely and plan ahead. He never has to worry about his heart because she will not spoil his life by being unfaithful to her man. She will be faithful to her man~even in thought. She will dress in a fashion that will tell others I belong to my man only.

2She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
* This is easy still today~his life will be better because he chose her. He is one smart man to have chosen so wisely. She makes her man look good.

13She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.
* She looks for bargains~she doesn't buy everything she wants. She is a hard worker~industrious.

14She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.
No girls~ this does not mean she drove miles away to get to that drive through~well not all the time anyways. tehe She keeps a stocked pantry so when the month is longer than the money she can scrape up a meal or two~that is just good advice even if I am the one giving it!

15She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
* She prepares food that is healthy and nutritious. She gets up early and stays up late if need be to get that house put to order. She takes her grocery budget and figures out just how many meals need to come from that money. She makes it work. And let me tell you sister ~this takes work in the recent state of our country. Give yourself a pat on the back here~you deserve it.

16She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
* She is wise in running the affairs of her household~she may even plant a victory garden if it is in her means to do so. I don't know if I could plant a vineyard but I think I can plant a small victory garden.

17She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.
* She puts on that exercise DVD she bought at Walmart and actually does it! OUCH
She tries to stay healthy for the well being of her family. Every time she fails in this area ~she starts back again. Ok~give yourself another pat on the back here. I feel your pain. Seriously~ we don't feel well when we neglect our physical body. We can't be all we need to be for the Lord if we are not taking care of ourselves. Ouch again!

18She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night.
19She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
* She is not lazy!

20She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
* She is generous and willing to give. She may even give a hamburger to the man on the corner holding up a sign reading ~"I'm Hungry" When she sees a need she cares enough to meet the need. She is tender hearted and compassionate. She stops to ask for God's direction as how to meet the need.

21She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
* She has her household prepared for all the seasons of life. She decorates her home. It is okay to spend money to make your home look beautiful~scarlet! Yes~ I like that thought!

22She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
* She looks like a lady ~a princess of the Most Heavenly King. She is not frumpy or unkept. She puts on a little make~up and cares what she looks like.

23Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land.
* Others will say~" What a smart man to haven chosen wisely". She will make her man look good. I want my husband to be proud of the women he married even after all these years.

24She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.
* She is creative and markets her talents. She is smart.

25Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
26She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

* Even when she has PMS she is nice and kind. Even when she has over scheduled herself again she doesn't make her family pay for it. Ouch again! OK~you might need a nap or two to get this one accomplished. I give you permission to take a power nap. It does a world of good!

27She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness.
* She makes her list and checks it twice. Plan the work and work the plan!

28Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
* Now seriously~can I tell you this won't happen until they are grown. Hang in there my friend ~ don't give up. You keep being the Momma!

29Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
30Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
31Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
The most important thing about this 2012 Proverbs 31 lady is that she knows in herself she can't do any of this on her own. But as we pour out our selfish wants and ways and allow the Holy Spirit to fill us~we can be this kind of woman~even if it is 2012!

Can I close with this thought? When we are truly seeking to please God in all areas of our life He will fill the gaps. I have many gaps~how about you? Praise God that is what mercy is all about!

Hope you have a wonderful day~

Happy First Day of Summer~

HAPPY SUMMER!

Oh Summer~ Remember that last day of school and the feeling of freedom from schedules~school books~ pressure. It was just a great feeling. I have decided that I just needed a summer like that! And we have been taking one~ and enjoying every minute of it!

Life just sometimes demands that we take some time to rest and restore~ this is our summer of restoration. I feel the winds of change blowing already for the school next year.

    **************************************************************
Mindless Thinking~

I am so guilty of mindless thinking~ My Brian just shakes his head at me now rather than scolding me like he once did in the early years of our marriage.

Have you ever locked your keys inside your car? Or worse yet locked a child in the car~ poor Hannie!
Mailed a bill without placing the check inside or worse yet~ make a deposit without putting the check in the ATM. They treat you like a criminal. I reassured them I was just mindless thinking rather than trying to commit a crime. (I mean I would have tried thousands of dollars instead of $40 if I were trying to kite myself a little cash)  Then there is the cheese cake ~ without the sugar~oops I forgot. It is horrible with no sugar. I promise you that!

These are the kinds of things we do when we don't give careful thought to what we are doing.  Careless thinking means we fail to do something we should do or that we do something we should not do. Sometimes these wrong actions or irresponsible inactions can create minor inconveniences or ~ they can have lasting consequences.

Ephesians 5:15-17

King James Version (KJV)
15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,
16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

As I stated above ~My Brian and I have found ourselves at a not one but several crossroads in our lives. I just hate crossroads. I want to just keep going on the road like always before. It feels comfortable~ safe~ without risk and oh so familiar. I like things to stay the same~ like a comfy pair of flip flops on the first day of summer.

God wants us to give careful thought to our actions, words, and relationships~  and most importantly making decisions that would bring honor and glory to Him.

Whatever I do today~ I want to give it careful thought. I am asking you to pray as we make some important decisions in our lives.

"Long Way Home"
I set out on a great adventure
The day my Father started leading me home
He said there's gonna be some mountains to climb
And some valleys we're gonna go through

But I had no way of knowing
Just how hard this journey could be
Cause the valleys are deeper
And the mountains are steeper than I ever would have dreamed

But I know we're gonna make it
And I know we're gonna get there soon
And I know sometimes it feels like we're going the wrong way
But its just the long way home

I got some rocks in my shoes
Fears I wish I could lose
That make the mountains so hard to climb
And my heart gets so heavy with the weight of the world sometimes

There's a bag of regrets,
My should've beens, and not yets
I keep on dragging around
And I can hardly wait for the day I get to lay them all down

I know that day is coming
I know its gonna be here soon
And I won't turn back even if the whole world says I'm going the wrong way
Cause its just the long way home

When we can't take another step
The Father will pick us up and carry us in His arms
And even on the best days, He says to remember we're not home yet
So don't get too comfortable
Cause really all we are is just pilgrims passing through

Well, I know we're gonna make it
And I know we're gonna get there soon
So I keep on singing and believing
What all of my songs say

Cause our God has made a promise
And I know that everything He says is true
And I know wherever we go
He will never leave us
Cause He's gonna lead us home

Every single step of the long way home
(Keep going, we're gonna make it)
(I know, we're gonna make it)
(We're just taking the long way home)
(Keep going, we're gonna make it)
(I know, we're gonna make it)
(We're just taking the long way home)
(Keep going, we're gonna make it)
(I know, we're gonna make it)
(We're just taking the long way home)
(Keep going, we're gonna make it)
(I know, we're gonna make it)
It's just a long way home

My First Lemon Meringue Pie

I am confessing~ this is my first Lemon Meringue Pie. It is my husband's favorite so I gave it a try and I will admit it was not that hard. I was a bit intimidated ~ but I think passed the test. It disappeared quickly!

My old neighbor~Kelly~ would make me chocolate pie and lemon for my husband~ I finally asked for her recipe and I am so glad I did. Enjoy!

3 Tablespoons of butter
1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
1 baked pie crust

  • Combine first three ingredients in a large heavy saucepan; set aside

  • Combine egg yolks, water and juice: stir into sugar mixture. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture thickens and boils. Boil 1 minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat, stir in lemon rind and butter. Spoon into pastry shell.

  • Spread Meringue over the top of hot filling~sealing the edge of the pastry.

  • Bake at 325 degrees for 25-28 minutes.

Meringue Recipe~

Indian Fry Bread~

When I was a little girl my friend's mother went on a mission's trip and learned how to make Indian Fry Bread~ that is what the Navajo Indians called it. It is so yummy.  She served it with stew but I like mine served with my favorite taco fixings on top.

Here is my recipe~

2 cups of flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon oil
3/4 cup water
vegetable oil for frying

* In large bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add oil and tap water. Combine everything and mix with a fork or your hands. Dust with four if it seems sticky. Add a little more water if it seems dry. You need a nice soft dough. Divide the dough into 6 balls and roll them out like a tortilla. Fry in a skillet of oil  on both sides. Top with your favorite taco fixings. YUMMY!

She's Got Issues~

She's Got Issues:

 Seriously Good News for Stressed-Out,

Secretly Scared Control Freaks Like Us

Ha ~ I was so excited when this book arrived in the mail. I could not wait to read it~ after all I am real sure at my age I have figured out just what issues I carry in my pocketbook. My son looks at the book on the counter and says, "Mom~ why do you have this book?"
Now if you get my point I took it as a great compliment but as we all know ~ we all have issues.

Sometimes we have trouble forgiving. At times we may feel like God gave us a raw deal when our dreams fall apart.  Once in a while our tempers get the best of us and ugly spews out of our mouth before we can say "Damage." Sometimes we have trouble dealing with past hurts and difficult people. Sometimes we are the difficult people.

When we fail to see and address our issues they just become who we are~ feeling comfortable like an old pair of shoes.

When all else fails~ we try to "fix" the broken parts of us in our strength~ until the next time our issue bubbles up once again.

Are you ready to address your issues? I dare you to read the book.

We in reality we have the power of Christ that can transform our weakness into strength.

This is a great book and I highly recommend it! The book includes quizzes and personal assessment tools.

Mindless Monday~

Staycation is over~ but it sure was nice. For the first time in 23  years we seemed too tired to take vacation. So we decided to vacation at home and it was really nice.

My Brian and I sat on the porch and watched a Momma Wren build her nest each morning while we drank our coffee.

My Brian worked on our very own~ "Gooseberry Patch Farm Truck"~ we call him Harv. Remember he was the reason Farming On Faith caught the attention of Gooseberry Patch and was featured on their blog. I love Gooseberry Patch. His original colors were cream and yellow and we have decided to paint him in just those colors.
You can read the article here. More pictures soon to follow~ he really is cute!

We did some of this too~

Simple Woman's Daybook~

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... rainy. Praise the Lord it rained~ our ground is so parched it is cracking. We need a month of Sundays worth of rain ~but will take what we received and will be thankful.

On my pond I have a momma and daddy goose with four babies. One seems sickly~ they have been lodging for a couple of days and we are tip toeing around them to make them feel safe. It is so fun to watch that momma and daddy with their babies.

I am thinking...  how much damage we can do with our words.  My facebook status this morning states~

A wise woman builds up her family and friends~ instead of plucking them down!

Job 42:10, "And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before."

Can we just remember that not everyone is on the same growth level as a Christian and they need time to grow? If we chop them off with our actions or words ~ they may never become Christian giants.
I am thankful... that no matter what circumstances shout to us ~ God is still in control and we can trust Him.

In the kitchen... today I need to clean out the fridge and do something with a bag of cherries.  Maybe a pie~

I am thinking of Indian fry bread with taco fixings for supper.

I am wearing... ha~ still my nightgown. After all it is a Monday morning.

I am creating... organization in my basement. Sheet rockers are coming some time this week to finish out our basement. I am so excited that My Brian hired it out. My plan this summer is to not work.... but relax and rest. I have learned you just never know what a new school year will bring. NO ~ I did not just mention ~"Back to School."  Just erase that thought!

I am going... to have a Garage Sale. Did I just say that?

I am wondering...  what Father's Day is like in Heaven? Didn't know this week would be this hard ~ I am sure my Dad is having the time of his life~ so that brings a smile to my face.

I am reading... Just came in the mail!

I am hoping... to get the basement done today.

I am learning~ even when my footing does not feel secure that He will make my feet like hind's feet.

“The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.  Habakkuk 3:19 KJV
Have you noticed life has more mountains to climb the older we get.

A hind is a female red deer. This kind of deer is able to move easily and rapidly across the rocks and uneven terrain of the mountains and mountainous landscape. It will leap from rocks without losing footing, suggesting that those with hinds’ feet are able to overcome things easily, and elegantly. As the trials come we can handle them eaiser the closer we get to the Lord. He promises to make our feet like hind feet.

Around the house... Monday morning messes :(

I am pondering... how God takes care of the birds and they never worry. They just have faith that God will take care of them. I am sure that is why they are always singing.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things... coffee on the front porch with My Brian~ I am sure missing him this morning!

A few plans for the rest of the week: Today I am taking my baby to practice parallel parking and lunch. Thinking we are going to make some memories today~ hoping they are good ones.

A peek into my day... oh now that would just be way to boring~ you have a good and Godly day.
