Thanksgiving Chat From The Farmhouse Porch~

Happy Thanksgiving ~

This Chat finds me in Washington so we will have to chat on my daughter's porch. I have been smooching on my sweet grandbabies and spending time with my kids. The turkey is ready and much of the dinner is prepared and ready for the oven .

Just finished a second round of Logo~what great fun!

Not to brag or anything but My Brian and I won last night and tonight also!
My daughter says it is because we are old and remember more slogans.
Getting old came way to soon.

President Lincoln's Words About Thanksgiving~

1 Chronicles 16:8

King James Version (KJV)
Give thanks unto the Lord, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.

This morning I read a devotion by Fresh Manna and Tim the author writes~

A poem on Thanksgiving from a child in school today might read like this:

It is so very true. It seems there is a movement trying to silence Christians~ from our schools to our court rooms. Everyone has freedom of speech but those who choose to live by Biblical principles. I am here to tell you I will not be silent about my Almighty God whom I am so very thankful to because He saved my soul and made me whole. Every good and perfect gift in my life~ He gave me and I am thankful.

Abraham Lincoln~ one of the greatest leaders our country has ever known was not silent either.

Here are the words of Abraham Lincoln~ April 30, 1863.

“We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved, the many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.
Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self- sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to God that made us! It behooves us, then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.
With this attitude, may we plan something with those we love, to give bold repentance and thanksgiving to our God who has blessed our great nation and is the only one who can put it back on track!” – President Abraham Lincoln, April 30, 1863

Amen and Amen President Lincoln!

Happy Thanksgiving from the Shindorf family to you and yours!

Thoughts For Thanksgiving Week

"Even if something is left undone,
everyone must take time to sit still
and watch the leaves turn."

-   Elizabeth Lawrence

"I am rich today with autumn's gold,
All that my covetous hands can hold;

Frost-painted leaves and goldenrod,
A goldfinch on a milkweed pod,
Huge golden pumpkins in the field
With heaps of corn from a bounteous yield,
Golden apples heavy on the trees
Rivaling those of Hesperides,
Golden rays of balmy sunshine spread
Over all like butter on warm bread;
And the harvest moon will this night unfold
The streams running full of molten gold.
Oh, who could find a dearth of bliss
With autumn glory such as this!"

-   Gladys Harp

"Over the river and through the wood,
To grandfather's house we go;
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh,
Through the white and drifted snow."
-

Lydia Maria Child, Thanksgiving Day, 1845
"Over the river and through the wood
Oh, how the wind does blow!

It stings the toes
And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.
Over the river and through the wood
To have a first-rate play.
Hear the bells ring,
Ting-a-ling-ling!
Hurrah for Thanksgiving Day!"
-   Linda Maria Child, Over the River

My ~oh ~my ~
Ready or not here comes Thanksgiving!

Colossians 4:2

 Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving;

Hebrews 13:15
By him therefore let us offer the
sacrifice of praise to God continually,
that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name

Billy Graham wrote, "Ingratitude is a sin, just as surely as is lying or stealing or immorality or any other sin condemned by the Bible." He then quoted Romans 1:21, one of the Bible's indictments against rebellious humanity. Then Dr. Graham added, "Nothing turns us into bitter, selfish, dissatisfied people more quickly than an ungrateful heart. And nothing will do more to restore contentment and the joy of our salvation than a true spirit of thankfulness."

I have to admit my calender looks like a scribbled up mess. It is such a busy time of year. I am on my way to spend the week with my Washington babies~ all of them! But we must slow down and think about all we have to be thankful for in the busyness of it all!

Hope you all have fun in the journey as you prepare for a busy week! I will be back soon! I have babies to smooch and cooking to do!

I Love The Quilts Of Love Series~ Aloha Rose Review

Abingdon Press has made winter a little more fun with The Quilts of Love series!

I was so excited to receive my first two books of this Quilt of Love Series. I will be getting a new book each month and so far I am not disappointed. Doesn't that sound like great fun?

Aloha Rose grabbed my attention from the very first line. Laney sets out to find her real parents.
She had been abandoned in a quilt and left on the door step of her adopted parents's home. She was adored and loved by them~ a charmed life so to speak. That is until her mother passed away and her father remarried. She felt the need to find her blood family and a connection to her past.

Her father with military connections was able to locate her blood family and she had great hopes of meeting the woman who left her on the steps of her parent's home. Only she didn't realize that she would be seen as a gold digger. Is was a harder road then she imagined it would be.

What a great story~I rate this book 5 stars.

A little about the Quilts of Love series from the Publishers.

A little info about the series: Quilts tell stories of love and loss, hope and faith, tradition and new beginnings. The Quilts of Love seriesfocuses on the women who quilted all of these things into their family histories. A new book is releases each month and features contemporary and historical romances as well as women's fiction and the occasional light mystery. You will be drawn into the endearing characters of this series and be touched by their stories.

When Laney Carrigan’s adoptive parents encourage her as an adult to seek out her birth family, her only clue is the Lokelani quilt in which she was found wrapped as an infant. Centering her search on the Big Island, she battles fears of rejection from a family that abandoned her once before while her faith struggles to embrace God’s love.
Along the path to her true heritage, she meets Hawaiian cowboy/helicopter pilot, Kai Barnes. Kai is determined to protect the people he’s come to regard as family against a woman he suspects of being nothing more than a gold-digger, but he finds himself drawn to Laney in spite of his reservations. He’s spent his entire life seeking forgiveness from past mistakes and longs for a second chance at happiness. Laney’s painstaking journey to find restoration and a place to belong among the breathtaking allure of the Big Island will lead her closer to her past and maybe even something more.

Soft Chocolate Chip Cookies Made With Oil

You will never notice that there are no hydrogenated oils in this recipe. I fluffed the flour first and leveled it off when measuring. These cookies are wonderful. I am so excited! Enjoy!

2 1/2 cups unbleached flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2  teaspoon salt
1  cup oil ( I used light olive oil.)
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Stir together dry ingredients~ set aside.

Mix together oil, brown sugar, white sugar and mix until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time. Then, stir in vanilla and almond extract. Mix dry ingredients in and last fold in chips.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes on ungreased cookie sheet. Take out while still a little doughy. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet about 5 minutes before removing.

Fabulous Friday's Question of the Day~ Are You Becoming Tough Or Tender?

Pastor Gary Williams  often said, "As we grow older~we tend to grow self absorbed." What is self-absorbed? Well it is just plain old being wrapped up in self~selfish.  Oh~I don't want to be like this!

Jesus served others. I want to be a servant. This old world has a way of making us tough instead of tender. Maybe it is time to do a reality check~ Am I becoming more tough around the edges rather than tender?   I think the true test would be to listen to the words that come out of our mouth today.

Jesus wants his disciples to be servants. When He was training his 12 disciples they were of some notion that being His followers would make them great.  Yet~ Jesus quickly set them straight. He makes it real clear ~they were to become servants.

Mark 10:42-43

42But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
43But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:

He was training them to serve others~

Mark 10:44

44And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.

If Jesus Christ~ the Son of God~ taught his disciples not only by words but deed that we are to serve others~ what makes me think I am not to be a servant too?
What are you going to do today to be a servant to those that are in your path?

Vintage Monograms

This my prayer for today!

Make me a servant
Humble and meek
LORD let me lift up those who are weak
And may the prayer of my heart
Always be
Make me a servant
Make me a servant
Make me a servant...to-day.

Country Faith~ Book Review

Wow~ what a great quality book. The pictures are bright and glossy and just down right beautiful. This book is a collection of Country Singers who share their favorite verses and a short testimony how the verse has helped them in their personal lives. It includes the singers from today but also those from days gone by. It has been really neat to read each singer's testimony of faith.

The book says "Once A Day"  implying it is a devotional but I would call it more of a testimonial of each of the artist.

The book is beautifully done. It has 56 reflections from singers and contains 112 pages. The book's goal is to inspire you to ponder on the question~ What is your favorite life's verse? At the end it shares the Gospel of Mark and reminds us of the most important thing in life~ the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It inspires you to spread the Good News which is what Once-A Day Country Faith is all about.

I rate this book 5 stars. This book was provided to me in exchange for my honest review.

Book Description

Pour yourself a fresh, cold glass of sweet tea and ease into your favorite chair with a copy of the Once-A-Day Country Faith. You’ll enjoy a front row seat to an intimate look at your favorite country stars as they discuss the personal significance of their favorite Bible passage. With contributions from 56 of today’s top country artists, the Once-A-Day Country Faith includes the Bible passage that tops each of their charts as well as the reasons why this part of scripture is so valuable to them. After reading Country Faith, you’ll be inspired to identify the Bible passage that’s most meaningful to you. You’ll also listen to your favorite country artists in a whole new way.

How Are You Doing~ Pilgrim?

This time of year I can't help but think how it must of felt for our fore-mothers who came to this foreign land. I mean some must have left their mommas and fathers. They had to leave behind their things ~like my friend calls them~their "pretties." I am not a materialistic person but I like my home to feel comfy and cozy. Those "things" make my home feel like home. I mean my beloved Kitchen Aid would be to heavy to bring on that boat over~ I am sure. Yet~ they traveled here for the freedom to worship God. That would take some "big faith."

They came here and made America ~ the home of the free~ and started from scratch. God love them! They must have been kind hearted ladies to embrace and accept everyone as they were on that first Thanksgiving feast~ they were strangers to this land. They had so much to learn and do. So much work to be done. They must have been willing to learn from their Native American womenfolk.

You know~ as Christians~ we are strangers to this land. We must be willing to work and be kind hearted. We must be willing to share what we have and be willing and open to learn as we go along. But in the end~ I know I am just as Pilgrim passing through. My home is in Heaven with my Heavenly Father. As I reflect on that first Thanksgiving ~ I question myself on just how well I am doing as a Pilgrim in this land?  Am I caught up in just my comfort and happiness~ or am I busy sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ?  Am I too busy to try and persuade others that there is a land far better than than this one. There is a God who loves us and He wants us to live forever with Him after our journey here is over.

1 Chronicles 29:15

For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers:
our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding

1 Peter 2:11

Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims,
abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

This world is not my home I'm just passing through
my treasures are laid up somewhere beyond the blue
the angels beckon me from Heaven's open door
and I can't feel at home in this world anymore

Christmas From Heaven Review~

"From little things come big things. "~ Berlin Candy Bomber

The true spirit of Christmas is found in this remarkable true story. Gail Halvorsen was a young pilot in the US Army. He was assigned as a cargo pilot to the war torn county of Berlin. Berlin at the time had been blocked by the Soviet.

On Christmas Eve, 1948 he was to deliver 20,000 pounds of flour. The Berlin children were more interested in hearing from the pilot and about his freedom than the flour. For almost an hour he answered their questions. As he left he wished he had more to give. The children were so thankful for what they were given. They had very little to eat let along a piece of candy. He reached into his pocket to find two sticks of gum. He divided it in little pieces and gave it to the children. They passed them around and pressed them to their noses to smell the minty smell. Their faces were filled with joy and wonder like he had never seen.

He wanted to do more...... and the rest became history. He became know as the Berlin Candy Bomber.
What a remarkable story and so worth reading. This is a Christmas coffee table book for sure.

You will not want to miss the rest of the story.

The book comes along with a DVD that brings the story to life ~ narrated by Tom Brokow the famed broadcast and journalist.

This book set was provided to me in exchange for my honest review from Shadow Mountain.

Over The Hills And Through The Woods~

I learned the song ~ Over The Hills And Through The Woods in grade school~ I just loved it. We practiced over and over again. It was the first song I remember singing on a stage. Sweet memories!

It is that time of year again. We have expectations and fantasies of what Thanksgiving and Christmas should look like. I mean I imagine the Walton style dinner where love oozes and the dinner is picture perfect just like the Norman Rockwell paintings.

Funny~ when I remember going to my Grandma Baker's I only remember how happy I was that we were all together~ laughing and having a good time. I don't remember the dinners at all. My grandmother only had one arm so the only thing in the world she could not do with one arm was peel potatoes~ no kidding. (She could even drive a stick-shift car.) But she had a way of making instant potatoes taste like real. They came in a great big gallon can. She doctored those babies in such a way not a soul knew they were instant. Other than her potatoes ~I don't remember what she served.
But honestly~ I don't even remember where we all managed to find a place to sit. Looking at that house today it is so amazing to me. It was the size of a "cracker jack" box.  She must have been stressed over trying to make it all work.

Yet~ why do we slip back into the fantasy of having a perfect day. The truth is families are not perfect. There are those that are quiet and those that are loud and boisterous. There are those that are gentle and kind and those that are well~ not so. But none-the-less we are still family. Warts and all! Sometimes the problem comes in the fact that that we would rather run back to a make believe world ~to a family we wish we had instead of accepting and being okay with what they are really like.

I don't know about you but I would rather spend this Thanksgiving giving thanks for my family members…….just as they are. Accepting each and everyone for just who they are~ as they are! How about loving them enough to look past each other's faults as we seek to see them just as God sees them~ fearfully and wonderfully made. We are all flawed with weaknesses. Brokenness is a fact of the human condition.

The truth is we are ordinary people who have ordinary lives. That is exactly where God wants to work ordinary miracles to make flawed humans to become more like Him and His Image. How about we look at ourselves and our family~ that we love~ as those that are totally loved and accepted by God~ no matter what they look like~ act like ~ or how they behave.

Romans 5:8

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that,
while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Let's give ourselves permission to have a less-than perfect Thanksgiving dinner with non-perfect people  but with a perfect God who has blessed us with this wonderful thing called Family.

Do You Ever Feel Invisible?

Sometimes I feel invisible~ do you ever feel like that?  I know that people see me. Caleb sees his mom who helps him with school and serves him food. Brian sees his wife. The girls see the mom they can call when they need a mother. My friends see a person to have fun with and share their heart with. On and on we can go with all the things we are known for ~the things we do.

But sometimes I wonder if anyone really sees the me underneath all those different hats I wear. My stars~ sometimes I wonder at times if I have become the roles that I play so well that I lost myself.

Some days we just go through the motions filling our day with people, activities and busyness and at the end of the day you wonder if anyone notices the real you under all those hats. The fear that troubles your soul. The dreams you have and the adventures you would love to take. We show such a spit and polished surface to the world but how many people really see underneath those hats?

The good news my friend is that when you have a day when you feel no one sees you~ there is One who does see under your mask. He sees your fears, your hurts, and your dreams. God sees and knows the real you. He sees you even in your weakest moments and darkest days.

Remember Hagar from the Bible. She was the servant of Sara who was used and abused to bear a child that Sara could call her own. She was rejected, pregnant and eventuality kicked to the curb~ the wilderness curb that is. I am sure she felt there was not a single soul who really cared enough to look at her hurting soul. BUT GOD~ saw her.

Genesis 16:13

And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

When God sees you he doesn't see the roles you play or the facade you plaster on your face. No~ He sees you just as you are. He sees you as His Creation. He sees a person who is fearfully and wonderfully made. He sees your fears, and your hurts. He dreams along with you to do the big things He put in your heart to do. He sees the real you and He loves you!

No matter where you are today~ overwhelmed ~ burdened~ or on top of the world ~ rest assured God sees you.

Now that is reason to celebrate today!

Tuesday's Chat On The Farmhouse Porch~

Good Morning Blog Friends~

You really would not want to have a chat on my farmhouse porch this morning. It is a frosty 12 degrees  here at Farming On Faith. Jack Frost came to call yesterday and I am hoping we warm back up to get a few outside projects done before he settles in for a long winter's nap.

Whew this time of year is busy~ have you already felt the pace of life speed up? Me too!

Here is our chat for today. If you would like to join in the chat click here!

  1. Would you rather sit in front of a fireplace with a roaring fire, soak in a lovely bath, or spend free time on your computer? Oh my stars on any given day it is all three. But I guess if I had to choose my favorite it would be a bubble bath! That just keeps this girl's world turning!
  2. Milk chocolate or dark chocolate? Milk chocolate~ I know it is not the healthy choice. I love chocolate !
  3. Have you ever tried a recipe from a blog or Pinterest? Oh my stars ~ yes! All the time. I mean nothing is better than a tried and true recipe.
  4. Do you have a guest room? If not, do you have a spare room that you use for something other than a bedroom (sewing room, office, craft area, etc)? I have three guest rooms, two actually are used as such. I am going to make a frilly~ girly office in the third. It is the next thing on my list of projects since the move.
  5. Is your hair curly, straight, or something in between? Well it is so straight but I curl it every day so most people would never know that!

"November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring."
-  Elizabeth Coatsworth

For this cause we also, since the day we heard it,
do not cease to pray for you,
and to desire that ye might be filled
with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; Colossians 1:9KJV

They criticized Catie for how she looked and behaved. Mayor Benny shows up and gives them a much needed lesson showing them that things are not always as they appear. It is a valuable lesson and a great book.

I Love You But I Don't Like You~

Deuteronomy 6:5

And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

We are taught to love from the time we are little.  We are taught to love our neighbors as ourselves. We teach our children to love their siblings, their parents and especially Jesus. What is love?

It is a tender emotion. I remember my first date with My Brian~ talk about love at first sight. I remember when we welcomed each of our babies into the world~ whew~ talk about falling in love. Oh my stars~ when the grandbabies came along the love shot to the moon and back.

As much as I love the people in my life~ at times I don't like them. Come on now I know you know what I mean. When they hurt my feelings or are mean and snarly with me~ they are hard to like but I love them in spite of it all. I hope they love me when I am mean and snarly too.

Certain days I don't feel like spreading the love around. Feelings can't be commanded~ can they?

That's when love must go beyond liking! So love must be more than just an emotion or feeling. I must keep loving even when I don't like. I think that's why so many marriages end in divorce. They confuse emotion with real love~ which is a choice! It is a commitment.

This verse below may help us understand the Lord's command~ "Thou shalt love....."  That in fact~ love is an action that we choose. It is choosing to be patient, kind, selfless and humble.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,

Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;

We can love others even when we don't like them~it is a matter of making a choice. That is why the Lord has given us the Holy Spirit to empower us to live a life that is obedient to God. With His help~ we can learn to love those we don't like. Who knows~ we may even begin to like them.
